A Seasonal Guide to Timing Your Group Cruise

Thinking about setting sail on an unforgettable group cruise? Choosing the right time to embark can make all the difference. Let's dive into the best times to cruise to popular destinations.

Peak season offers a lively atmosphere, perfect weather, and plenty of activities. But be warned: it can get a bit crowded and pricey. Popular destinations like the Caribbean and Mediterranean are especially busy during peak season.

We took a Mediterranean cruise in June 2023. Those bustling ports in France and Spain were unforgettable, but the crowds and the heat could be a bit much at times.

Shoulder season offers a happy medium. You'll enjoy pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and potentially lower prices. Consider cruising the Mediterranean in the spring or autumn, or exploring Alaska during the shoulder months of May and September.

Off-peak season provides a more relaxed experience. You'll find fewer crowds and lower prices, but keep in mind that some attractions and activities might be limited. The Caribbean during the off-peak months offers a serene escape, while Northern Europe can be a delightful surprise during the shoulder seasons.

When to Cruise Where

  • Caribbean: Aim for the dry season (December to April) for sunny skies and calm seas. Our Caribbean group cruise guide has everything you need to get planning!

  • Mediterranean: Shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

  • Alaska: Summer is the best time to witness stunning glaciers and wildlife. Read our Alaska group cruise suggestions here. Want to experience it for yourself, but not ready to book your own group cruise? Join us on our Alaska group cruise in July 2025!

  • Northern Europe: Cruise the Baltic Sea and Norwegian Fjords during the summer months for mild weather and vibrant scenery.

  • Hawaii: Year-round cruising is possible, but the best time to visit depends on your group’s preferences. Winter offers drier weather, while summer brings warmer temperatures and lush greenery. Considering Hawaii? Get more information in our Hawaii blog.

  • Mexico: While the rainy season is typically May to October, consider the shoulder months for optimal weather and fewer crowds. We were on a group cruise in the Mexican Riviera in June 2024, and the weather was delightful, and it was easy to explore everything ports had to offer! Considering a Mexican Riviera cruise? Our Mediterranean Adventure

We'll never forget our Mediterranean cruise in June 2023. We visited several stunning seaside towns in France and Spain, and had so much fun soaked up the festive atmosphere. Just remember to book early, especially for cabins with balconies (we were on on Virgin Voyages’ Resilient Lady and had a balcony to watch the scenery go by!). And don't forget to pack light, breathable clothing, stay hydrated, and plan indoor activities - especially during the hottest parts of the day.

Our tips for a successful group cruise

  • Choose Your Destination Wisely: Consider your group's interests and preferences. Do they love white sand beaches? History and architecture? Food and culture?

  • Time It Right: Select the best season for your chosen destination.

  • Book Early: Secure the best deals and cabins, especially for popular cruises.

  • Pack Smart: Remind the group to pack versatile clothing and essentials like sunscreen, hats, and comfortable shoes.

In addition to considering seasonality, you should:

  • Plan Shore Excursions: Research and book shore excursions in advance.

  • Take Advantage of Onboard Amenities: Enjoy the ship's pools, spas, fitness centers, and entertainment options. Especially if the weather isn’t cooperating!

  • Budget Wisely: Factor in additional expenses like shore excursions, souvenirs, and specialty dining.
